There are three different types of licenses for two-wheeled vehicles in California, and each confers different privileges. They are:
- Class M1 — This license allows the rider to operate any two-wheeled motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized scooter, along with any vehicles allowed by a Class M2 license.
- Class M2 — This license allows the rider to operate any motorized bicycle, motorized scooter, or moped. It does not allow the rider to operate more powerful vehicles like motorcycles.
Steps to Obtain a California Motorcycle License
According to the California DMV, the specific requirements to obtain a motorcycle license vary based on your age, whether you already have a license from another state, and other factors. The basic steps required to get your Class M1 or Class M2 license include:
For motorcyclists under 21
- Completing a basic driver education course
- Completing a motorcycle training course
- Filling out a driver’s license application
- Getting a signature from a parent or guardian — Mandatory for minors
- Passing a vision test
- Fingerprinting
- Paying the required fees
- Having your picture taken
- Passing the knowledge and skills tests
- Holding a permit for six months — Required for all riders aged 15½ to 20. Motorcyclists with permits rather than licenses are not allowed to ride at night, on highways, or carry passengers.
For applicants 21 and older
Applicants over 21 do not need a permit before applying for a motorcycle license. But they must pass a DMV test or provide proof of training through the California Highway Patrol’s California Motorcycle Safety Program (CMSP).
